The holiday season is here as I write this, although it looks very different from previous years. As we know, the holidays are frequently accompanied by additional stress, which is exacerbated this year by the unprecedented events and shifts of 2020. Many years ago, as an antidote to holiday stress, I began a regular practice of reflecting and meditating on the nature of Gratitude. This simple practice always helps me to ground and center when holiday obligations feel overwhelming, as it reminds me of Gratitude’s place in my life. And even though I am feeling less celebratory this year, I continue to contemplate the essence of Gratitude- in meditation, daily life, and my Reiki practice. After all, Reiki and Gratitude are natural partners. …

My previous article explored the concept of toxic positivity and how it can stealthily creep into our lives when encountering difficult or traumatic situations and events. The article describes how toxic positivity creates an unhealthy energy imbalance due to the suppression, or ignoring of, emotions we deem “negative. “ It also discusses the need for reclaiming balance in our lives and breaking this harmful cycle in order to move toward wholeness. During my challenges with toxic positivity, Reiki has been an invaluable resource as it gently led me to accept and embrace all of who I am. Today’s article offers suggestions for Reiki practitioners to reduce or eliminate toxic positivity in their lives to help restore balance on the path to wholeness and authenticity. This article’s recommendations reflect what Reiki taught me during my journey through, and ultimately out of, the toxic positivity trap. …

As Reiki practitioners, we are keenly aware of the importance of caring for our energy on all levels — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Indeed, as beings composed entirely of energy, vibrating at various frequencies, we also know that maintaining healthy energies is truly the path to wellness, growth, and evolution. In keeping with this, we strive to tend to our energies as we work to achieve an ever-higher energy frequency. We encourage ourselves (and sometimes others) to “keep your vibration high,” “stay positive,” and “look for the silver lining.” These are all worthy endeavors, but it is important to note that embracing positive clichés and platitudes as a way of life can cause us to dismiss, suppress, and ignore the range of feelings and emotions integral to the human experience. By stubbornly maintaining a sunny attitude and demeanor, even during extremely difficult and painful events, we are at risk of inviting the phenomenon of “toxic positivity” into our lives. Mental health practitioners define it as, “The overgeneralization of a happy optimistic state that results in the denial, minimization, and invalidation of the authentic human emotional experience.”

It is no secret that our beautiful Mother Earth, or Gaia, is struggling greatly these days. Too many years of carelessness, selfishness, and greed have taken their toll on this beautiful planet we call home. As cohabitants on Earth, we are each accountable to Gaia and charged with the responsibility of caring for her. Like a loving mother, Gaia supports, nurtures, and grounds us, as she forgives our mistakes, and loves us unconditionally. This is evident in the promise of each new season, from the renewal of life each spring to the quiet sleeping darkness of winter. Her love is reflected in the beauty of the forests, the majesty of the mountains, and the awe-inspiring grandeur of the seas. Gaia’s love for her children is boundless, encompassing every form of life on the planet. She showers her riches upon us in myriad ways, and in return for these amazing gifts, she asks for nothing but to be treated with respect and love. Sadly, humanity is frequently unworthy of this devotion. The human race has plundered her riches, sullied her gifts, and damaged her splendor. …

As we know, Reiki’s spiritually guided energy manifests through dozens of different styles and systems of Reiki, and new additions continue to be channeled and developed with seemingly increased frequency. In meditation, my guides tell me this is purposeful and in keeping with the evolution of Reiki and its role in the new earth. Because of the planet’s ongoing and arduous emergence into the New Consciousness, Reiki is becoming more mainstream, more widely available, and more recognized as a powerful healing modality in its own right. Also, my guides have said that its efficacy as a complement to western medicine and as a vehicle of spiritual growth will continue to garner more attention and appreciation worldwide. …

In my most recent article, I discussed the concept of existential depression and its manifestation as a spiritual emergence or crisis. The article also described the symptoms of existential depression, along with its similarities to, and differences from, traditional clinical depression. Additionally, it examined existential depression as an opportunity for momentous spiritual growth as the individual struggles with thorny issues such as the meaning of life, the inevitability of physical death, and the possibility of existence and consciousness beyond the material world. Indeed, the challenges presented during an existential depression can serve as a vehicle to move us ever closer to the truth of our existence — that we are each a spark of the divine Source, eternal and immortal. This is not to say that navigating existential depression is an easy task — it is often immensely daunting. …

Depression is a word familiar to us all and is a mental health condition experienced by countless individuals in varying ways and degrees of severity. It is so widespread that it’s often referred to as the common cold of mental health. However, this metaphor fails to address the scope of depression; it is not limited to the mind but instead affects all aspects of one’s being and is indeed a holistic disorder.

From a mental health standpoint, traditional clinical depression is characterized by persistent feelings of deep sadness, despair, irritability, agitation, and frustration. These feelings may manifest in a myriad of symptoms: decreased interest in previously enjoyed activities, sleeping and eating disturbances, fatigue, low motivation, concentration and memory difficulties, unexplained physical pains and symptoms, and in some extreme cases, suicidal thoughts or attempts. …

Generally speaking, the treatment phase of the professional Reiki session begins with the energetic, or byosen scan, and is conducted when the client is comfortably situated on the Reiki table, and after the Pre-Session Intake and Discussion. Many Reiki practitioners recognize Byosen (“sick accumulation” or “place of sickness”) as a Japanese Reiki technique that identifies the areas most in need of healing and provides a baseline of energetic information for the practitioner as the treatment begins. Also, it creates a field of healing energy in the energetic body, enhancing the flow of Reiki throughout the treatment. The value of an intentionally conducted byosen scan cannot be underestimated; it provides a wealth of information about the recipient’s energy frequency in both the physical and subtle bodies. …

Candle and Crystals in Reiki Healing Space

The first part of this article discussed the many steps and decisions involved in creating a professional Reiki practice, with a focus on the importance of your new business’s location. Many practitioners opt to have a home-based business (instead of renting or sharing commercial office space) because of its advantages, and it is highly advisable to weigh all the factors involved before making the final choice. Also, inviting Reiki to become your “business partner” during the decision-making process can smooth the path; each practice carries a unique energy signature, and Reiki will work with the practitioner/creator for the best possible outcome. …

Upon completion of their training, many Reiki practitioners decide to practice Reiki professionally. It goes without saying that this choice should not be undertaken lightly; so, for this article, it is assumed that prior to launching a Reiki business the practitioner is certified in Reiki, is comfortable working with the energy, and has some experience offering Reiki to others, either through volunteer work or with family and friends.

Of course, there are many other preliminary steps, some of which include deciding upon a business structure, choosing a name for the practice, securing professional liability insurance, and becoming familiar with any local licensing or legal requirements. For example, a few states in the U.S. …
